Do you find follow-ups intimidating? I used to dread them.
I'd heard the mantra "the fortune is in the follow-up" though, so I knew avoidance was not a strategy that was going to serve me. I needed a plan!
Like most successful strategies, my follow-up system is simple. In fact, it's so simple you might be surprised at how effective it is.
Are you ready? Here it is....
I tell people what I'm going to do, and then I do that.
When I send someone information, I tell them "Here's the info you asked for. I"m going to follow up with you on Thursday so I can answer any questions you have."
And guess what I do on Thursday? I contact them as I said I would, and ask if they have any questions.
If I reach out on Thursday and I don't get a response, I'll leave it a few days and try again.
Many of the women I talk to are genuinely busy, so I don't take a lack of response personally, but I don't give up either. I stay in the relationship.
Nothing turns people off faster than treating them as a business transaction, so my follow-up often includes topics utterly unrelated to my business, product or service.
For me, the thing that differentiates follow-up from pestering is variety.
My business is an integral part of my life, but it's only a small part of who I am as a person.
People aren't stupid. They don't magically forget that I'm the woman with a solution to their problems if I fail to remind them every time I contact them.
So, tell people what you're going to do next, and do it. But do it flexibly and in a way that builds the relationship and deepens the connection. That way, we all get to enjoy the experience.
