Sometimes a financial breakdown can be a positive thing. For me, it was the wake-up call I needed to initiate a change in my spending habits.

I used to have a love affair with shoes. I thought it was harmless even if having a boot full of shoes in need of donation instead of a spare tire was inconvenient that time I got a flat.

It took being smacked in the face with my spending habits for my shoe obsession to come to a screeching halt.

Life was still low-tech when I was wielding my credit card with abandon. One day, long ago, I opened my mail and found I was over my credit limit. I was baffled. I remember staring at that piece of paper and cycling between denial and despair as my mind tried to process what my eyes were seeing.

Eventually, I decided that my card must have been hacked. After all, there was obviously no way my actions could have caused this problem without me even knowing, right?

I marched myself off to the bank (oh how I wish Internet or phone banking had been invented then) and stood in line, trembling, afraid of the consequences of this unknown person's actions on my life. When I reached the front of the line and explained the situation, the teller, sensing my distress, turned her screen around and kindly and patiently walked me through each transaction against my card.

And with each transaction, my stomach dropped, because I realised I hadn't been hacked, I'd been the one doing the hacking. It was all me, and it was humiliating. I walked out of the bank with my tail between my legs.

I had no idea what to do next, but I was sure of one thing - I was never, ever, ever going to put myself in that situation again.

Sometimes it takes a break down to have a break through. What's the breakthrough you're wanting? Could your network marketing business be the turning point in your journey towards financial responsibility?
